New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held extensive talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday as both sides attempted to strengthen India-US relations amid recent diplomatic and economic tensions.

The meeting, which lasted for nearly an hour, focused on bilateral cooperation across defence, trade, strategic technologies, energy security and regional geopolitical developments, including the ongoing crisis in West Asia.

Rubio’s India visit marks his first official trip to the country since assuming office and comes at a sensitive time for ties between New Delhi and Washington.

PM Modi, Rubio discuss wide-ranging cooperation

According to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Rubio briefed PM Modi on the progress made in multiple areas of India-US cooperation.

The discussions reportedly covered:

  • Defence collaboration
  • Strategic technologies
  • Trade and investment
  • Energy security
  • Connectivity initiatives
  • Education partnerships
  • People-to-people ties

The meeting also included discussions on regional and global developments, particularly the escalating tensions in West Asia and their broader economic implications.

The PMO said Rubio shared the US perspective on ongoing geopolitical challenges during the interaction.

PM Modi reiterates support for peace through diplomacy

During the talks, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s support for peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.

The Prime Minister reportedly reiterated India’s consistent position favouring diplomatic efforts and de-escalation in conflict zones.

The West Asia crisis is understood to have figured prominently during the discussions due to its impact on global energy markets, trade routes and regional stability.

India has been closely monitoring developments in the region because of its dependence on energy imports and the presence of a large Indian diaspora across Gulf countries.

Invitation extended for White House visit

According to sources familiar with the discussions, PM Modi also requested Rubio to convey his greetings to Donald Trump.

The Prime Minister reportedly expressed interest in maintaining continued engagement with the US administration.

An invitation was also extended for PM Modi to visit the White House in the near future as both countries seek to stabilise and deepen bilateral ties.

Quad meeting and Jaishankar-Rubio talks scheduled

Rubio is also scheduled to hold detailed discussions with S. Jaishankar during his visit.

The US Secretary of State will additionally participate in the upcoming Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi.

The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, commonly known as the Quad, remains a key platform for cooperation among India, the United States, Japan and Australia in the Indo-Pacific region.

Officials indicated that the Jaishankar-Rubio talks are expected to focus heavily on:

  • Energy cooperation
  • Trade and investment
  • Critical technologies
  • Strategic security
  • People-to-people exchanges

The two sides are also likely to discuss the economic consequences of the West Asia crisis, especially disruptions affecting global energy supply chains.

Rubio to visit Agra and Jaipur

As part of his India itinerary, Rubio is scheduled to travel to Agra and Jaipur before returning to Delhi for the Quad meeting.

US Ambassador Sergio Gor welcomed Rubio’s visit and described it as part of Washington’s broader strategy to strengthen ties with India.

The ambassador highlighted the importance of the Quad partnership and emphasised the US administration’s focus on building a stronger strategic relationship with New Delhi.

India-US ties recovering after recent tensions

Rubio’s visit comes weeks after Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Washington DC for talks aimed at stabilising bilateral relations.

India-US ties had witnessed strain following disagreements related to tariffs and comments made by President Trump regarding India-Pakistan military tensions earlier this year.

Washington’s imposition of punitive tariffs on Indian goods had also contributed to diplomatic unease between the two countries.

Despite these differences, both governments appear keen to rebuild momentum in strategic and economic cooperation.

Strategic partnership remains crucial

India and the United States continue to maintain strong collaboration across defence, technology, trade and Indo-Pacific security initiatives.

Both countries increasingly view each other as important strategic partners amid shifting global geopolitical alignments and rising regional security challenges.

The ongoing discussions are expected to help reinforce cooperation in critical sectors while addressing areas of concern that emerged over recent months.

Analysts believe the renewed diplomatic engagement indicates both New Delhi and Washington are prioritising long-term strategic cooperation despite temporary tensions.

For now, Rubio’s visit is being viewed as a significant step towards rebuilding trust and expanding India-US engagement across multiple sectors.
