New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the country’s youth, including sportspersons, from more than 1,500 locations on Thursday, August 27, as part of a nationwide programme ahead of National Sports Day.

The virtual address will be part of ‘Khelo India Samvaad – Khel Ki Baat, PM Ke Saath’, an initiative of the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports aimed at encouraging greater participation in sports and strengthening the connection between young people and the sporting ecosystem.

Nationwide programme on August 27

The programme will be held two days before National Sports Day, which is observed annually on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.

Mr Modi’s interaction is expected to focus on India’s sporting journey, the role of young people in developing the country’s sporting culture and the importance of fitness and participation in sports.

The programme will connect participants across the country, giving young people and sportspersons an opportunity to be part of a nationwide sporting initiative.

National Sports Day celebrates sporting legacy

National Sports Day is observed every year on August 29 in honour of Dhyan Chand, one of India’s most celebrated hockey players. His contribution to Indian hockey continues to inspire generations of athletes.

The government has increasingly promoted sports participation among young people through initiatives such as the Khelo India programme, which seeks to identify and nurture sporting talent while encouraging a stronger culture of fitness.

The August 27 interaction is expected to provide a national platform for highlighting the achievements and aspirations of young athletes as India continues to expand its sporting ambitions.
