Puducherry: A tragic incident unfolded in Pudunagar on Tuesday, claiming the lives of a 60-year-old woman, her daughter, and granddaughter due to exposure to poisonous gas. According to authorities, the toxic gas originated from the household’s underground drainage system, filling the toilet.
The sequence of events began when Senthamarai entered the toilet and collapsed due to the gas. In a bid to rescue her, her daughter Kamatchi rushed in, only to succumb to the fumes as well. Witnessing her mother and grandmother unconscious, Baghyalakshmi also entered the affected area, meeting the same fate.
Neighbors acted swiftly, rushing the victims to the hospital, but tragically, medical professionals confirmed their deaths were a result of inhaling the poisonous gas.
Emergency services, including police and firefighters, were promptly dispatched to the scene. They evacuated nearby residents, emphasizing the danger posed by the underground drainage system.
In response to the heartbreaking incident, Chief Minister N Rangasamy announced a compensation of ₹20 lakh for the bereaved family and initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
