Police on Tuesday said an 18-year-old woman who died recently had ended her life following a domestic quarrel, ruling out allegations of murder made by her boyfriend. Authorities maintained that there was no evidence of foul play, though investigations are continuing.

The clarification comes after Anandakrishnan, who claimed to be the boyfriend of the deceased, alleged that her family members had killed her as they were opposed to their planned marriage on the grounds of caste differences.

Police dismiss murder allegation

Denying the allegation, a senior police officer told PTI that the case was one of suicide. “It is death by suicide. Investigations are on,” the officer said, adding that preliminary findings did not indicate any criminal involvement by family members.

Police said statements are being recorded from all concerned and the circumstances leading up to the death are being examined in detail.

Boyfriend alleges family opposition

According to Anandakrishnan, he and the deceased, identified as Sivamathi, had been in a relationship for the past two years. He claimed both families were aware of their relationship and that his family had accepted their decision to marry.

He told reporters that the couple had planned to register their marriage on February 6 and had even purchased wedding clothes. However, he alleged that Sivamathi’s family strongly opposed the marriage and that a domestic quarrel took place at her house on Sunday.

Events before the death

Anandakrishnan further claimed that after the quarrel, Sivamathi was prevented from contacting him and her mobile phone was taken away. “I saw her on Sunday afternoon standing on the terrace. Later that evening, I came to know that she had died,” he said.

The deceased was pursuing her undergraduate degree in physics, while Anandakrishnan works as a team leader in a private firm.

Investigation continues

Police said the case has been registered and all aspects, including family dynamics and personal stress factors, are being probed. Officials urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation is underway.
