Nagpur: Police in Nagpur have booked the son of a politician after a DJ system used during a Dahi Handi celebration allegedly exceeded permissible noise levels, with the sound reportedly reaching 102.4 decibels.
Loud music continues despite warnings
The case relates to a Dahi Handi event in Nagpur where police were monitoring sound levels amid heightened enforcement of noise pollution rules. Authorities had issued directions to organisers to keep music within prescribed limits.
According to the report, the DJ continued to operate at a high volume despite notices and warnings from the police. A sound reading of 102.4 decibels was reportedly recorded during the event.
The incident has drawn attention because the person booked is the son of a politician, highlighting the police department’s stated focus on enforcing noise regulations during public celebrations regardless of the organiser’s background.
Nagpur steps up noise pollution checks
Nagpur police have intensified checks at Dahi Handi venues following restrictions on high-decibel sound systems. Police teams have been using decibel meters to record sound levels and gather evidence of violations.
In another recent case, police booked 12 people, including a BJYM office-bearer, after sound levels at a Dahi Handi event near Chota Tajbagh reportedly crossed 100 decibels.
Authorities have clarified that celebrations can continue provided organisers comply with permitted sound levels and avoid prohibited high-capacity systems. At some venues, organisers have opted for traditional performances, bhajans and dhol-tasha instead of high-volume DJ music.
The latest case has once again brought the balance between festive celebrations and public health into focus. Police are expected to continue monitoring events and taking action where noise pollution rules are allegedly breached.
