Chennai: The Annai Velankanni Shrine in Besant Nagar has been formally elevated to the status of a basilica by Pope Leo XIV, marking a significant moment for the Catholic community and devotees who gather at the shrine.
Historic proclamation witnessed by devotees
The proclamation was made during a grand ceremony on Sunday evening in the presence of senior Catholic clergy, priests, religious leaders and thousands of devotees.
The ceremony began with a procession of archbishops and priests, followed by a special concelebrated Mass. Monsignor Andrea Francia, Chargé d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature in India, formally announced the elevation of the shrine.
The official decree recognising the church as a basilica was read in Tamil, English and Latin. Special prayers dedicated to Our Lady were offered, along with collective prayers for peace in the world.
Devotees celebrate the new status
As the proclamation was announced, devotees at the shrine expressed their joy by chanting praises to Mother Mary.
Archbishop George Antonysamy of the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore, former Archbishop AM Chinnappa, CCBI Deputy Secretary General Fr Stephen Alathara and Basilica of Our Lady of Velankanni rector Fr Arulappa were among those present.
The ceremony was also attended by several archbishops and priests from across Tamil Nadu, along with public representatives.
With the elevation of the Besant Nagar shrine, Chennai now has three basilicas, joining San Thome Basilica and St Thomas Mount Basilica.
The shrine’s new status adds another important chapter to the spiritual history of Besant Nagar and its long-standing devotion to Our Lady of Good Health,
