A disturbing incident from Beniganj in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj has sparked widespread outrage after a security guard allegedly shot dead a stray dog at the residence of a sitting judge, reportedly because the animal stepped onto a newly constructed floor and damaged its finishing.
Video triggers anger on social media
The incident came to light after a video surfaced on social media, showing a guard chasing a stray dog while pointing a firearm at it. In the footage, a voice is heard allegedly instigating the act, saying “Mariye, mariye”. Moments later, a gunshot is heard, followed by the guard confirming that the dog had been hit and killed.
The visuals have drawn sharp criticism from animal lovers and rights activists, who termed the act brutal and unlawful.
Animal activists demand strict action
Animal rescuer Vidit Sharma shared the video on X, calling the incident “absolutely heartbreaking” and a clear case of violence against a voiceless animal. He demanded strict legal action, stating that killing a stray dog is a punishable offence under animal protection laws.
Another video circulating online features an animal activist claiming that the guard has been identified as Rajendra Pandey, a home guard allegedly posted at the residence of Allahabad High Court Judge Kailash Nath Sinha.
According to the activist, the dog was shot dead because it allegedly spoiled the finishing of a newly constructed road or floor at the residence.
Allegations of intimidation while filing complaint
The activist further alleged that when she attempted to lodge an FIR, she was threatened by the local station house officer (SHO), raising serious concerns over accountability and due process.
These allegations have intensified calls for an independent probe and transparent action against those involved.
Legal and ethical concerns raised
The incident has once again brought focus on the treatment of stray animals and the misuse of authority. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, killing or causing unnecessary pain to animals is a criminal offence.
Animal welfare groups have urged authorities to ensure that the law is applied equally, regardless of the position or posting of those involved.
Public reaction grows
Social media users across the country have condemned the act, questioning how such violence could occur at the residence of a constitutional authority. Many have demanded immediate suspension of the guard and action against anyone who encouraged or attempted to suppress the complaint.
Police are yet to issue a detailed official response.
