A 25-year-old pregnant woman from Sradhapur village, Odisha, recently fell victim to an elaborate online scam, losing Rs 17,000 after scammers posed as health department officials. This incident underscores the rising threat of cybercrime, particularly targeting vulnerable individuals.
The victim was approached by a fraudster who pretended to be a health department worker. According to reports from the Times of India, the scam commenced when the fraudster contacted a local ASHA worker, who was familiar with the victim’s pregnancy. The scammer posed as a health official from Delhi, leveraging the name of the Mamata scheme—a legitimate government program designed to provide financial assistance to expecting mothers.
To appear credible, the scammer arranged a conference call with the victim, claiming she was eligible for funds under the scheme. During the call, the fraudster assured her that she would receive an initial instalment of Rs 6,000, thus building trust. Unfortunately, the victim was unaware that she was being scammed.
Following the fabricated conversation, the fraudster sent the victim a link to claim the supposed funds. Trusting the process, she opened the link and shared her One-Time Password (OTP), believing it was necessary for verification. Instead of receiving the promised funds, Rs 17,000 was quickly debited from her bank account.
Realising she had been scammed, the victim promptly reported the incident to the local police in Lahunipada. This case highlights the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals, especially in rural areas where people may lack awareness of such scams.
