A 35-year-old pregnant woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district allegedly injured her abdomen with a kitchen knife during intense labour pain before delivering a healthy baby girl, officials said on Thursday.
The woman, identified as Nankai from Nandwal village under Baundi police station limits, was rushed to the Fakharpur Community Health Centre after neighbours heard her screams and alerted emergency services.
Baby delivered safely
According to hospital staff, she delivered a baby girl through normal delivery at the health centre. However, her condition deteriorated soon afterwards.
Doctors later found a deep abdominal wound, reportedly self-inflicted. The hospital’s chief medical superintendent said she was brought in around 3.20 pm and had suffered significant blood loss. Given the severity of her injuries, she was referred to a higher medical facility in Lucknow for advanced treatment.
Living alone after husband’s death
Neighbours said Nankai had been living alone since her husband died of illness about six months ago. When she went into labour on Thursday afternoon, the pain allegedly became unbearable.
A video purportedly circulating on social media shows the woman on a stretcher stating that she harmed herself due to severe pain, police said. Authorities are verifying the clip.
Emergency responders transported her to the health centre, where medical staff stabilised the newborn. The baby girl is reported to be in stable condition.
Officials said further inquiry is underway.
