Suva (Fiji): On Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu was honoured with the Companion of the Order of Fiji, the highest civilian award of the island nation, during her historic visit. This accolade underscores the strong bond between India and Fiji, marking the first visit by an Indian head of state to Fiji.
The award was conferred by Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere. In her address to the Fijian Parliament, President Murmu expressed India’s readiness to partner with Fiji in building a resilient and prosperous future. She highlighted the shared democratic values and cultural ties between the two nations, referring to her predecessor Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech on common values.
Murmu also praised Fiji’s respect for traditions and multiculturalism, describing it as a beacon of happiness in a conflict-ridden world. She expressed optimism about the upcoming projects, including a Super Specialty Cardiology Hospital in Suva, aimed at addressing critical needs in the region.
In her address, President Murmu acknowledged the historical ties between India and Fiji, particularly the contribution of Girmitiyas (indentured workers) who arrived in Fiji 145 years ago. She recognized their significant role in the development of Fiji and praised the Fijian government for honoring their legacy, including declaring Girmit Day a national holiday and making Hindi an official language in Parliament.
President Murmu also met with Indian community members, expressing gratitude for their continued cultural preservation and contributions to Fijian society. She noted the Indian diaspora’s role in strengthening bilateral ties and commended initiatives like the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card and the Know India Programme for connecting the younger generation with their roots.
Following her visit to Fiji, President Murmu is set to travel to New Zealand and Timor-Leste as part of a six-day tour aimed at advancing India’s Act East Policy.
