Mumbai: Devotees at a temple in suburban Chembur were shocked to find the idol of Goddess Kali Mata dressed as Mother Mary, prompting police to arrest the temple priest responsible for the act, officials said on Tuesday.
Video of idol sparks outrage
According to the RCF police station, a video circulated on social media showing the Kali Mata idol in attire resembling that of the mother of Jesus Christ. Devotees visiting the temple on Sunday reported the incident to the police, expressing concern over the change in the deity’s appearance.
When questioned, the temple priest, identified as Ramesh, stated that Goddess Kali had appeared to him in a dream and instructed him to “adorn her in the form of Mother Mary.”
Legal action taken
A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for hurting the religious feelings of a community. Following the complaint, Ramesh was arrested and produced before a local court, which remanded him to two days of police custody.
