If web series like Prison Break felt far-fetched, a recent incident from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district has convinced the internet otherwise. A viral video claiming that two undertrial prisoners escaped from Kannauj district jail using a rope made of blankets has triggered memes, laughter and serious concerns over prison security.

The video, shared by popular social media handle Ghar Ke Kalesh on January 6, quickly gained traction online. In the clip, policemen, prison staff and a few reporters are seen standing near the jail wall, examining a makeshift rope allegedly used in the escape.

What caught viewers’ attention was not just the jailbreak, but the calm, almost casual conversation among officials. A senior officer is heard explaining the escape route matter-of-factly, followed by instructions to post a guard at the spot—an exchange that fuelled both humour and outrage online.

What police say happened

According to official sources, the escape occurred early Monday morning amid dense fog in Kannauj, which severely reduced visibility. The two undertrials, identified as Ankit and Dumpy, allegedly tied together six blankets from their barracks to form a rope and scaled the jail’s 22-foot-high boundary wall.

The fog reportedly prevented watchtower guards from spotting the escape, while CCTV cameras failed to capture clear visuals due to poor visibility.

Officials suspended, probe ordered

Following the incident, four prison officials were suspended for alleged negligence:

  • Jailer Vinay Pratap Singh
  • Deputy jailer Badri Prasad
  • Head warder Shivcharan
  • Jail warder Shivendra Singh Yadav

Authorities also said the role of the jail superintendent is under review. Pradeep Gupta, DIG (Prisons), Kanpur range, has ordered a detailed inquiry into the security lapses.
