Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday strongly condemned the targeted killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling it “despicable” and deserving of “strong condemnation”.

In a statement, she alleged that “so-called leaders of the democratic world” orchestrated the assassination and described the widening conflict as tragic. “The world needs peace, not more unnecessary wars,” she said, invoking Mahatma Gandhi’s words that “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”.

Criticism of Modi government

Priyanka Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “genuflecting before” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump. She claimed India was paying a “hefty price” for what she termed the “substance and style” of Modi’s foreign policy.

The Congress party described the Union government’s response to the conflict and its silence on Khamenei’s killing as a “betrayal of India’s values, principles and interests”.

Broader political attack

Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh alleged that Modi’s recent visit to Israel came at a time when global tensions were already high. He termed the Prime Minister’s speech at the Knesset a “display of shameful moral cowardice”.

Ramesh also criticised US President Trump’s reported praise of Pakistan’s military leadership, referring to General Asim Munir, and questioned Washington’s broader regional approach.

The ruling BJP has not yet issued a detailed response to the Congress leaders’ remarks. As the Iran conflict intensifies, political debate in India appears set to sharpen over the country’s diplomatic stance.
