Hyderabad: Protests were held in the city following the shocking incident of a Tehsildar being set ablaze ?in her office on the outskirts of Hyderabad, on Monday afternoon by a man who came to the office on the pretext of speaking to her.
The incident took place in Abdullaprumet Mandal, Ranga Reddy district where Tahsildar Vijaya Reddy, 37, died on the spot after she was allegedly set ablaze by the accused identified as K Suresh over an alleged land dispute. Thousands of people including staff of the revenue department joined the last journey of Vijaya Reddy.
Two staff, including Vijaya’s driver, Gurunatham, who came to her rescue were seriously injured in the incident and Gurunatham succumbed to injuries on Tuesday, said sources. Even the assailant has reportedly received 60 per cent burns and has been admitted to a hospital in the city.
It is said that at about 1.30 pm on Monday, Suresh arrived at Vijaya Reddy’s office on the pretext of speaking to her. Approximately after 20 minutes after his entry into the office, Vijaya Reddy came running out of the office engulfed in fire. In a gruesome video, that has gone viral, the female officer can be seen getting completely burnt before the people around could respond.
The police sources have said that investigations are on to ascertain the exact reason behind Suresh’s act.
Condemning the brutal killing of the Tahsildar, Telangana Director General of Police M Mahendar Reddy vowed to bring the culprit to book.
This is the third incident in the last six months that a woman government employee has been attacked. In the last few months, two forest officers were attacked by locals. In the first incident, a female forest officer was beaten with bamboo sticks by a mob led by a ruling party TRS leader.
