A deeply disturbing incident was reported from Melaghar in Tripura’s Sepahijala district, where a 13-year-old boy allegedly died after setting himself on fire in public following an argument and alleged public humiliation.
The deceased has been identified as Pradip Saha. According to sources, the incident occurred on Thursday while the boy was returning home from the market with his father.
Argument escalates in public
Sources said an argument broke out between Pradip and his father, Nayan, during their return from the market. During the altercation, a local man, identified as Dipak Sutradhar, allegedly intervened, verbally abused the boy and slapped him in public for arguing with his father.
Locals alleged that the public scolding and physical assault deeply traumatised the child, who felt humiliated in front of bystanders.
Boy rushed to hospital, later dies
Soon after the incident, Pradip allegedly poured kerosene on himself and set himself on fire in full public view. He was immediately rushed to GB Pant Hospital, where doctors made efforts to save him. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.
The incident sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents expressing grief and outrage over the circumstances that led to the boy taking such an extreme step.
Police probe underway
Police confirmed that the matter is under investigation. Statements of witnesses are being recorded to ascertain the sequence of events and determine accountability. No arrests have been reported so far.
