Pune: Three of the four men arrested in connection with the murder of a 17-year-old boy in Pune were paraded to the crime scene while tied to the bonnet of a police vehicle, as authorities said the move was intended to reassure the public and reinforce confidence in law enforcement. The incident followed the brutal killing of the teenager in the city’s Katraj area, where he was allegedly chased and hacked to death by a group of seven men.
Teenager hacked to death in Katraj
According to the police, the murder took place on Monday night when the 17-year-old had gone with a friend to collect a mobile phone.
Investigators said seven men, travelling on three motorcycles, allegedly chased the teenager after spotting him.
The victim reportedly tried to flee, but the attackers caught up with him and repeatedly assaulted him with sickles and other sharp-edged weapons.
Police said the assailants continued the attack even after the teenager collapsed, inflicting multiple injuries to his head, face and hands.
He was rushed to Bharati Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Four arrested, three still absconding
Police have arrested four of the seven accused in connection with the murder.
Three of those arrested were later taken to the crime scene in a police vehicle, where they were tied to the bonnet during the reconstruction of the incident.
The remaining three accused are absconding, and search operations are underway to trace and arrest them.
A murder case has been registered against all seven accused, and the investigation is continuing.
Police cite public confidence as reason for parade
Explaining the decision to parade the accused, senior police officer Mansing Patil said the exercise was intended to reassure residents following the shocking crime.
According to the officer, the objective was to eliminate fear among citizens and demonstrate that the police were taking firm action against those involved in serious offences.
Police maintained that the exercise was aimed at strengthening public confidence in law enforcement following the murder.
Preliminary probe points to old rivalry
Investigators believe the murder may have stemmed from an earlier dispute.
According to the preliminary investigation, the victim had allegedly been involved in a disagreement with the sister of the main accused around three months ago.
Police suspect the accused had threatened the teenager following the incident and later planned the attack as an act of revenge.
Officials said all aspects of the case, including the motive and sequence of events, are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
Residents express anger
The police procession drew a large crowd of local residents and members of the victim’s family.
Many demanded that the accused’s faces be uncovered, while some attempted to hit them with slippers during the parade.
Police personnel intervened to prevent any untoward incident and maintained security throughout the exercise.
Officials also stated that the victim had previously been named in a few criminal cases, although they clarified that the investigation would determine all relevant facts surrounding the murder.
Conclusion
The murder of the teenager has sparked outrage in Pune, with police intensifying efforts to apprehend the three absconding accused. While the public parade of the arrested men was described by police as a confidence-building measure, the investigation into the motive and circumstances of the crime remains ongoing.
