The death of a 16-year-old girl due to suspected rabies has triggered widespread concern in the district, prompting a surge in anti-rabies vaccinations and intensified efforts to control stray dog populations.

Tragic death after delayed treatment

The girl, a resident of Puthiyamputhur, was reportedly bitten by a pet dog over two months ago. Sources indicate that she did not seek immediate medical attention or complete the prescribed anti-rabies vaccination course after the incident.

Her condition worsened in recent days, and she was admitted to a private hospital in Thoothukudi on March 28, where doctors confirmed symptoms of rabies. She was later referred to Madurai Rajaji Government Medical College Hospital but died on March 30 without responding to treatment.

Medical experts emphasised that incomplete vaccination following animal bites can lead to fatal consequences, as rabies is almost always preventable with timely intervention.

Rise in vaccination demand

Following the incident, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of people approaching government hospitals and primary health centres for anti-rabies shots.

Health officials reported that even pet owners who had experienced minor bites or scratches from their own animals have rushed to seek preventive treatment, highlighting growing awareness and concern.

Intensified stray dog control drives

In response, the district administration has stepped up stray dog-catching drives across Thoothukudi. Corporation officials confirmed that 98 stray dogs were captured through seven drives conducted in March.

As per protocol, the animals were vaccinated and sterilised under the Animal Birth Control programme before being released back into their respective areas.

Importance of timely vaccination

Health department officials reiterated the importance of completing the full course of anti-rabies vaccination. After the first dose, follow-up doses must be administered on the third, seventh, and 28th days to ensure effectiveness.

They urged the public not to ignore even minor bites or scratches, stressing that early medical intervention can save lives.
