Chennai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived in Chennai on Saturday and headed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s residence in Neelankarai for a lunch meeting ahead of the sixth edition of the Congress party’s student outreach programme, Chhatron Ki Goonj, also known as Maanavargalin Kural in Tamil.
The meeting is drawing political attention as it is the first between the two leaders since the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led Secular Social Justice Victory (SSV) alliance was formally named. It comes amid developments in Tamil Nadu’s alliance politics, with TVK, the Congress, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) part of the alliance, according to the information provided.
Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, travelled to Vijay’s residence soon after arriving from New Delhi. He was then scheduled to proceed to Island Grounds for an evening interaction with students.
The Congress leader had earlier attended Vijay’s swearing-in as Chief Minister on May 10, 2026. Saturday’s lunch meeting adds another point of contact between the two leaders as their parties engage on political and public issues in the state.
Rahul Gandhi’s student outreach programme
The Chhatron Ki Goonj programme is being presented as an interactive session intended to give students an opportunity to raise concerns directly with Gandhi.
The event, whose Tamil title is Maanavargalin Kural, is expected to focus on issues affecting students and young people, including employment, education costs, competitive examinations and access to opportunities.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief Manickam Tagore said between 10,000 and 20,000 students who had registered and received QR codes were expected to attend.
“Our leader will address issues related to Tamil Nadu students, such as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, lack of jobs, education for girls and women and the union government’s educational policy. It is going to be an interaction session,” Tagore said.
He also confirmed that Gandhi would meet Vijay at the Chief Minister’s Neelankarai residence before attending the programme.
The Congress and its student organisations have promoted the event through banners, flyers and digital posters across Chennai, including at Island Grounds. The publicity uses both the Hindi title, Chhatron Ki Goonj, and the Tamil title, Maanavargalin Kural, reflecting the programme’s bilingual identity.
Posters invite students to question Gandhi
The campaign material has sought to position the event as a conversation with students rather than a conventional political rally.
One promotional message reads, “Chennai students, this one’s for YOU. You talk. Rahul listens.” Another says, “Your voice belongs here. Your questions belong here.”
Other posters invite students to attend with friends from their colleges, asking: “Got something to say? Got something to ask? Pull up with your college crew.”
Some larger displays feature Gandhi’s earlier remark, “I really love coming to Tamil Nadu,” alongside messages from supporters expressing their affection for the Congress leader.
The publicity suggests that students will be encouraged to raise questions and share their concerns during the session. The central issues highlighted by the Congress include entrance examinations, jobs, girls’ and women’s education, and the Union government’s education policy.
The event is expected to provide a platform for young people to discuss these issues directly with Gandhi, although the precise format and range of questions will depend on the proceedings at the venue.
Tight security arrangements across Chennai
Security has been strengthened for Gandhi’s visit, with police preparing for the student event and maintaining heightened vigilance across the city ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled programmes in Chennai on October 11.
According to police, entry to the Island Grounds event will be restricted to registered participants with valid QR codes. Separate entry corridors will be maintained for men and women, while the general public will not be permitted to enter the venue.
Officials said a five-tier security arrangement had been put in place, involving around 15,000 police personnel under Chennai Police Commissioner A Amalraj.
Additional checks were planned along transit routes and in areas surrounding the venue. Authorities are also maintaining a close watch on security-sensitive locations as the city prepares for the political programmes scheduled over the weekend.
The restrictions are intended to regulate the crowd, verify registered attendees and maintain law and order during the event.
TVK-Congress alliance in focus
The lunch meeting comes at a politically significant time for Tamil Nadu, where the relationship between TVK and the Congress has attracted attention following the formation of the SSV alliance.
The alliance includes TVK, the Congress, IUML and VCK, according to the details provided. The meeting between Gandhi and Vijay is therefore being viewed in the context of the parties’ political engagement as well as their stated focus on social justice and public issues.
The meeting also follows bypoll victories for the ruling party in Madurantakam and Dharapuram, adding to the political backdrop against which Gandhi’s visit is taking place.
However, the lunch meeting itself does not establish that any new political agreement or electoral arrangement will be announced. No specific decisions arising from the discussion were detailed in the information available.
The two leaders’ interaction is likely to draw attention because of their respective roles in national and Tamil Nadu politics, as well as the wider implications of cooperation between the Congress and TVK.
Gandhi’s schedule for the day
After the lunch meeting at Vijay’s Neelankarai residence, Gandhi was scheduled to travel to Island Grounds for the student interaction in the evening.
Following the programme, he was expected to leave for Chennai Airport at around 8.30 pm to board a 9.40 pm flight to New Delhi.
The visit combines political engagement with a public-facing programme focused on students. While the meeting with Vijay places alliance politics in the spotlight, the Congress has emphasised that the Island Grounds event will focus on questions related to education, employment and opportunities for young people.
The discussions at both engagements will be watched for indications of how the Congress and TVK intend to work together and how Gandhi addresses the concerns raised by Tamil Nadu’s students.
