December 14, 2024, marked the centenary of Raj Kapoor, one of the most celebrated filmmakers in Indian cinema. Known for his larger-than-life approach, Kapoor’s legacy is honored by contemporary stars such as Amol Palekar, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Vidya Balan, Vivek Oberoi, and many more, each reflecting on his lasting influence.

Amol Palekar, although known for his roles in parallel cinema, admired Kapoor’s early works that highlighted the struggles of the common man. Palekar fondly mentioned Kapoor’s films that tackled societal issues, showcasing his left-leaning ideologies that were often reflective of the common people’s plight. Madhuri Dixit, who worked alongside Raj Kapoor’s son Rishi Kapoor in multiple films, recalled how Raj Kapoor’s passion for filmmaking was unparalleled. His willingness to put everything on the line to create memorable cinema was a testament to his dedication.

Vidya Balan shared her experience of discovering Raj Kapoor’s films through reruns on Doordarshan, reminiscing about the simplicity and charm of his works that have remained relevant even today. She noted that films like Shree 420 still resonate with audiences. Other actors, like Vivek Oberoi, also recalled their childhood memories of watching Raj Kapoor’s films with their families and marveled at the director’s visionary ability to create timeless works. Divyenndu, known for his role in Mirzapur, lauded Raj Kapoor as the “auteur of Indian cinema” and recognized his significant impact on the filmmaking process, especially his interactions with legendary artists like Lata Mangeshkar.

The RK Film Festival, organized by PVR INOX and the Film Heritage Foundation, showcases a curated list of Kapoor’s films such as Awara, Barsaat, Awaara, Mera Naam Joker, and Sangam. The three-day retrospective allows both old and new audiences to rediscover Kapoor’s cinematic brilliance, bringing his legacy to the big screen once again.

Raj Kapoor’s films, known for their emotional depth, universal themes, and powerful performances, remain a beacon in Indian cinema. His contribution to shaping Bollywood into what it is today will always be remembered, not just by his family, but by the entire Indian film industry.
