A bike taxi driver working with Rapido was arrested by police in Sangareddy district for allegedly stabbing a woman and snatching her gold mangalsutra while she was grazing cattle in Mamidipally village.

The accused, identified as Mythari Jagan (37), a resident of Thatipally, was apprehended by Sangareddy Rural Police on Wednesday, two days after the incident. Police recovered the stolen gold ornament and the motorcycle used in the crime.

Attack while grazing cattle in Mamidipally

According to police officials, the incident occurred on Monday when the victim, Sujatha, was grazing cattle on the outskirts of Mamidipally village. Jagan allegedly approached her on his bike and attempted to snatch the gold mangalsutra she was wearing.

When Sujatha resisted and questioned his actions, the accused reportedly attacked her with a knife, injuring her before fleeing the spot with the gold chain.

The woman raised an alarm, following which local residents alerted the police. She was later provided medical assistance, and her condition is said to be stable.

Accused tracked and arrested by rural police

Based on the victim’s complaint and preliminary investigation, Sangareddy Rural Police launched a search operation. Using local intelligence and technical inputs, the accused was traced and arrested within Sangareddy town.

During interrogation, police recovered the stolen mangalsutra and seized the bike used during the offence. The accused was subsequently produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody.

Police warn against opportunistic crimes

Police officials said preliminary inquiry revealed that the accused had been leading a relatively comfortable lifestyle earlier and had recently taken up work as a bike taxi driver. Further investigation is underway to determine whether he was involved in similar offences in the district.

The police also urged residents, particularly those working alone in agricultural fields and grazing areas, to remain cautious and report suspicious movement immediately.

Rising concern over rural safety

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of women in rural and semi-rural areas of Telangana. Law enforcement authorities reiterated their commitment to intensified patrolling and swift action against crimes involving violence and theft.
