A viral image of a rare albino sambar deer spotted at Sydney Point in Panchgani has captured the attention of wildlife enthusiasts and tourists in Satara district. The Satara forest department is currently investigating the claim but has found no physical evidence, such as pugmarks, at the site. Panchgani range forest officer Ganesh Mahangade stated that while the image sparked curiosity, no one else has reported seeing the white sambar deer, raising doubts about the authenticity of the sighting or whether the image was edited. He urged anyone who spots the animal to immediately notify the department.
Albino animals, due to their lack of camouflage and difficulty finding a mate, face increased risks in the wild. Environmental researcher Datta Jagtap explained that albinism in mammals is a genetic condition affecting melanin production, which determines the pigmentation of skin, fur, and eyes. This rare condition has been previously observed in a female albino sambar deer spotted in Navegaon National Park in 2020.
