A three-year-old girl lost her life in a tragic accident in Vikhroli after two large loudspeakers installed for Republic Day celebrations fell on her, triggering outrage among residents and raising serious questions about public safety and accountability.
The incident occurred on Monday evening in Ambedkar Nagar, under the jurisdiction of the Vikhroli police. The victim, Angel Rajesh Sonkar, was reportedly playing on the street near a local temple when the mishap took place.
Speakers topple during routine activity
According to preliminary police findings, a clothes scrap dealer passing through the narrow lane allegedly brushed against the wires connected to the loudspeakers. The contact caused the heavy sound equipment, mounted precariously, to lose balance and topple onto the child.
Residents nearby rushed Angel to a local hospital, but doctors declared her dead due to the severity of her injuries. The incident was captured on a CCTV camera, the footage of which has since circulated widely, sparking shock and anger both locally and on social media platforms.
Police register FIR, probe negligence
The Vikhroli police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation into the incident. Officials said they are examining whether the organisers of the Republic Day event had obtained the necessary permissions and adhered to prescribed safety norms while installing the loudspeakers in a public space.
Police are also reviewing CCTV footage and recording statements from eyewitnesses to determine if criminal negligence was involved. “We are looking into all aspects, including who authorised the installation and whether adequate safety measures were in place,” a police official said.
Family alleges delay in medical treatment
Adding to the grief, Angel’s family has alleged that there was a delay in providing timely medical treatment after the accident, a claim that authorities said would also be examined as part of the probe.
Local residents blamed the event organisers for failing to secure heavy equipment in a densely populated area, calling for stricter enforcement of safety guidelines during public celebrations.
