Elephants, known for their strength and adorable antics, often capture the hearts of wildlife enthusiasts, especially in rescue scenarios. Recently, Tamil Nadu forest officials from the Gudalur division in the Nilgiris earned widespread admiration for their heroic efforts in saving a baby elephant.

The young elephant had fallen into a 30-foot-deep sand well, prompting a swift and dedicated response from the rescue team. IAS officer Supriya Sahu shared videos of the rescue mission on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing the team’s determination and success.
Sahu’s post read, “A very heartening news is coming in just now about the successful rescue and reunion of a juvenile elephant in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu Foresters in Gudalur Forest Division in Nilgiris have successfully rescued a juvenile elephant from a 30 feet deep sand well in a farmland where the young elephant had accidentally fallen.”
The team, led by DFO Gudalur Vengatesh Prabhu, worked tirelessly for 8 hours to create a ramp, enabling the baby elephant to walk out safely. Throughout the ordeal, the calf’s mother and herd waited nearby. Social media users praised the team’s efforts, with comments like, “A big salute to the entire team” and “Kudos to the team of foresters.”
Previously, Supriya Sahu had also acknowledged the field officers who reunited a lost baby elephant with its mother at the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. She congratulated the dedicated Manampalli squad, highlighting the contributions of officers like Manikandan and Prabhakaran, whose efforts have left a lasting impact.
