A deeply disturbing case of prolonged abuse has emerged from Mahoba district, where a 70-year-old retired railway employee and his mentally challenged daughter were allegedly held captive and tortured by their caretakers for nearly five years, ultimately leading to the man’s death.
The victim, Omprakash Singh Rathore, a retired senior clerk with the Indian Railways, had been living with his 27-year-old daughter Rashmi after the death of his wife in 2016. Rashmi is mentally challenged and fully dependent on others for daily care.
Caretakers accused of total control and neglect
According to Omprakash’s brother Amar Singh, the family had hired Ram Prakash Kushwaha and his wife Ramdevi as caretakers to assist the elderly man and his daughter. However, the arrangement allegedly turned into a nightmare.
The accused couple is said to have gradually taken over the entire house, confining Omprakash and Rashmi to the lower rooms while occupying the upper floor themselves. Family members allege the victims were denied food, clothing, hygiene, and access to relatives.
“Whenever anyone tried to visit, the caretakers would make excuses and send them away, saying Omprakash did not wish to meet anyone,” Amar Singh said.
Horrific discovery after death
The abuse came to light after Omprakash’s death on Monday. When relatives arrived at the house, they were confronted with a shocking scene. Omprakash’s body was severely emaciated, indicating prolonged starvation. His daughter Rashmi was found naked in a dark room, barely alive.
A relative, Pushpa Singh Rathore, said Rashmi’s condition was heart-wrenching. “Her body looked like that of an 80-year-old. There was no flesh left on her body, only bones. She was clinging to life,” she said.
Doctors at the hospital declared Omprakash dead on arrival. The police have taken the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem examination.
Neighbours in shock, family seeks justice
Neighbours expressed disbelief at the fate of a man they once knew as dignified and well-dressed, often seen in formal attire during his working years. The family has now taken Rashmi into their care and is demanding the strictest possible punishment for the accused.
Police officials have confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway, with charges likely to include wrongful confinement, cruelty, and culpable homicide.
The case has reignited concerns about elder abuse, the safety of persons with disabilities, and the urgent need for stronger monitoring of in-home caregiving arrangements.
