Kolkata: The mother of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder victim and BJP MLA Ratna Debnath launched a sharp attack on former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following disciplinary action against senior police officials over the handling of the case.
Her remarks came after the state government suspended three senior police officers over alleged lapses in the investigation and initiated departmental proceedings against them.
Debnath alleged that there was a wider conspiracy surrounding both the crime and the subsequent investigation and claimed that several aspects of the case had not been fully examined.
Victim’s family raises questions over investigation
Speaking to reporters after the disciplinary action, Ratna Debnath alleged that not all individuals connected to the events surrounding the incident had been thoroughly investigated.
She questioned the scope of the probe and claimed that several unanswered questions still remained in the case.
Debnath also made allegations against former officials and accused authorities of failing to investigate all possible angles linked to the incident.
She reiterated the family’s longstanding demand for a more comprehensive investigation into the case.
Family alleges cover-up attempts
Ratna Debnath’s husband, Sekharranjan Debnath, also criticised the manner in which the investigation had been conducted.
He alleged that attempts had been made to suppress aspects of the case and claimed that lapses had occurred from the initial stages of the investigation.
At the same time, he welcomed the recent disciplinary action initiated by the current administration and said further action should be taken against all individuals found responsible.
He also stated that the family would continue seeking accountability in the matter.
Three officers face disciplinary action
The action was announced by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who confirmed disciplinary proceedings against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, former Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Abhishek Gupta and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Indira Mukherjee over alleged lapses linked to the case.
The state government has also ordered departmental proceedings against the officers.
Case continues to generate political debate
The case dates back to August 2024 when a junior doctor was found dead inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
A civic volunteer identified as Sanjay Roy was arrested and later sentenced to life imprisonment.
However, the victim’s family has consistently maintained that additional individuals may have been involved and has continued to seek a broader investigation.
The issue continues to remain politically sensitive and has triggered sustained debate over accountability and the handling of the investigation.
