The Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan 2026, a nationwide road safety awareness campaign, witnessed deeply emotional moments as actors Amitabh Bachchan and Alia Bhatt listened to real-life stories of loss caused by road accidents, underlining the human cost of unsafe behaviour on Indian roads.
Alia Bhatt recalls childhood tragedy
Speaking at the event, Alia Bhatt shared a painful memory from her childhood. She recalled losing her nanny, Sharda, in a road accident when Alia was just 12. Sharda was travelling on a two-wheeler without a helmet and was killed on the spot after a collision with a truck. Alia said the incident created lasting fear and anxiety in her family and led her mother to strictly enforce seatbelt use, even in the backseat.
Reflecting on the incident now as a mother, Alia said her understanding of road safety has deepened. She stressed that being responsible on the road is not just about rules, but about protecting lives and families.
Influencer shares son’s tragic death
At the same event, food influencer Rajani Jain, popularly known as Chatori Rajani, narrated the devastating loss of her 16-year-old son Taran, who died in a traffic accident in 2025. She said her son could have survived had he been taken to hospital sooner, urging people not to hesitate in helping accident victims.
Amitabh Bachchan reflects on courage and empathy
Later, Amitabh Bachchan wrote about the event on his blog, describing Rajani Jain as a “brave lady” who shared her story without anger, but with a plea for compassion and timely help. He also noted how Alia became emotional while listening to Rajani’s account, unable to continue speaking at one point.
Bachchan emphasised the need for public campaigns that encourage bystanders to act quickly and humanely during road accidents, reminding people that anyone could face such a situation someday.
