What began as a suspected crude bomb assembly operation on a rooftop in the Airfield area ended in tragedy, claiming two lives and triggering an intensive multi-agency investigation.
Sehnawaz Malik (26), described by police as a history-sheeter, succumbed to severe burn injuries on February 4, days after the January 27 explosion at his residence. His mother, Lizatun Bibi (51), who was also critically injured in the blast, died during treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital on February 10.
Malik’s fiancée, Truptimayee Mahal (23), and associate Amiya Mallick (27) sustained serious injuries and remain under treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Suspected crude bomb assembly
Police suspect the explosion occurred while crude bombs were being assembled on the rooftop of the rented three-storey building. Investigators said Malik had seven prior criminal cases, including attempted murder and offences under the Arms Act, and had been released on bail around six months ago.
The force of the blast prompted a preliminary inquiry by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which later ruled out terror or radicalisation links. However, officials said they examined the possibility of a broader conspiracy.
Forensic sources indicated that highly explosive material may have been used. Preliminary findings reportedly suggest the possible presence of hexahydro trinitro triazine, a compound associated with high explosives, though further analysis is underway.
Ongoing probe and security measures
Bomb disposal squads, fire personnel and forensic experts collected evidence and seized materials suspected to have been used in bomb-making. Residents said they were unaware of any illegal activity.
Police are investigating whether Malik acted alone or had accomplices, and whether the explosives were intended for criminal or political violence. Surveillance and vigilance have been heightened in sensitive areas.
A video purportedly capturing the moment of the blast has surfaced online. Authorities said the footage is being verified as part of the investigation.
