A video showing a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable allegedly kneeling on a youth’s neck at Tiruvottiyur railway station has triggered widespread criticism on social media, prompting an internal inquiry.
According to officials, the incident occurred on February 11. The youth was reportedly travelling without a ticket in a first-class compartment after boarding the train from Chennai Central. Police said he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
Viral video sparks outrage
When the train reached Tiruvottiyur station, a train ticket examiner (TTE) apprehended the youth and handed him over to RPF personnel. A video clip that later surfaced online shows the constable pressing his knee against the man’s neck for a period of time. The footage also appears to show the officer sitting on the youth’s chest and slapping him.
The clip quickly circulated on social media platforms, drawing condemnation and raising concerns over the use of force.
Internal inquiry ordered
Following the video’s circulation, RPF officials questioned the constable involved. His identity has not been disclosed.
Sources said an internal departmental inquiry has been initiated to examine the circumstances of the incident. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry report.
The episode has once again highlighted the need for adherence to standard operating procedures and proportionate use of force during law enforcement actions at public transport hubs.
