External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized that he raised the issue of Indians stranded in the Russia-Ukraine conflict zone directly with his counterpart Sergey Lavrov during bilateral talks in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Speaking to ANI, Jaishankar stated, “I raised the issue very clearly and strongly. Several Indians have been coerced into service with the Russian Army. It’s unacceptable to us that Indian citizens find themselves in another country’s army in a war zone. I conveyed to him the need for cooperation, emphasizing our friendship and partnership. We must ensure these individuals return to India swiftly and safely, whatever the circumstances.”

Jaishankar further disclosed that Lavrov acknowledged the concerns, and that the Indian Foreign Ministry has engaged with the Russian Defence Ministry on the matter.

“I stressed the importance of robust follow-up. I have taken this up and will continue to do so until all our citizens return,” he added.

Regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Russia, Jaishankar described it as an excellent opportunity for both leaders to discuss the burgeoning economic ties between the nations.

“We’ve had a strong historical relationship and value the annual summit tradition. Last year, I carried the PM’s commitment to continuing this tradition, and we are eager to strengthen it,” Jaishankar noted. He highlighted the significant growth in the economic relationship between India and Russia and emphasized the importance of leadership-level engagement to further enhance bilateral ties.

Earlier reports indicated that approximately 20 individuals were allegedly misled into joining the Russian Army under false promises of lucrative employment, with at least two fatalities reported. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that 10 of these Indian nationals have returned to India.
