SC M 612021New Delhi: The Supreme Court Tuesday suspended the implementation of the three farm laws and also set up a committee to facilitate talks between the central government and farmer unions.

It four-member committee will submit a report before the court on the farm laws. The members of the committee are Bhupender Singh Mann, BKU, Anil Ghanwant of Shetkari Sanghatana, Ashok Gulati, Agricultural Scientist and Pramod K Joshi of International Food Policy Research Institute.

The farmers from various parts of the country have been staging protest against the farm laws in national capital over the last 47 days.

The apex court, which had earlier said that it was ‘extremely disaapointed’ by the government’s handling of the crisis, was hearing a batch of petitions challenging the validity of the three farm laws that were enacted last September.

Now, a day after the Apex Court asked the centre if it was going to suspend the farm laws or the Court itself should do it, a bench, headed by Chief Justice of India S A Bobde and comprising Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, suspended the farm bills and said those “genuinely” interested in finding a solution would appear before the committee.

“We are staying three farm laws until further orders. We are willing to suspend the laws but not indefinitely and not without some purpose,” Chief Justice SA Bobde said.

“These are matters of life and death. We are concerned with laws. We are concerned with lives and property of people affected by the agitation. We are trying to solve the problem in the best way. One of the powers we have is to suspend the legislation. We want to solve the problem,” the CJI said addng that the Supreme Court-appointed committee will not be mediating between the two factions.
