Setback for Indian Contingent as Key Sports Excluded from 2026 Commonwealth Games

Setback For Indian Contingent As Key Sports Excluded From 2026 Commonwealth Games

India’s hopes for success at the 2026 Commonwealth Games have taken a hit as major sports like wrestling, badminton, hockey, cricket, and shooting have been excluded from the Glasgow schedule. In addition, table tennis, triathlon, and squash have been dropped, further impacting India’s medal prospects. The event, set to be held from July 23 to August 2, 2026, will feature a trimmed lineup of just 10 sports to maintain a budget-friendly approach.

The sports retained include athletics, swimming, gymnastics, track cycling, netball, weightlifting, boxing, judo, bowls, and basketball. India, which secured 61 medals in the 2022 edition, will now face a reduced chance of replicating its success, especially with wrestling and table tennis—two of its strongest disciplines—no longer part of the competition. Despite this, India ranks 4th in the all-time Commonwealth Games medal tally with 564 medals.
