New Delhi: A day after an anti-encroachment drive by Railways in Delhi’s Shakur Basti claimed life of a toddler and rendered thousands homeless in the biting cold, the issue is likely to take a political turn.
It is said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), JDU and the TMC are sharpening their knives to corner the ruling NDA over the issue and the JDU has already given adjournment motion notice in Rajya Sabha to bring up Shakur Basti demolition issue. Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is also all set to rake up the issue in Parliament. TMC MPs will also join AAP MPs in their protest outside Parliament today. Congress scion Rahul Gandhi visited the site and met the victims.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has sought and appointment with Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to discuss the issue. The Delhi Government has also declared that its MLAs will be staging a stir on Monday in front of Parliament against the anti-encroachment drive which took place on Saturday.

More than 500 slums were demolished in an anti-encroachment drive conducted by the Indian Railways in Shakur Basti on Saturday and a child died during the drive. While the family of the child held the Railways responsible for the death, the Railways remained defiant stating that its actions were in accordance with Central and State laws.

Railway sources had also said that they had nothing to do with the death of the child.

The residents also insisted that their homes were demolished without any prior warning or notice.
