Sikkim Krantikari Morcha Secures Landslide Victory in Assembly Elections

Premsingh Tamang

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) retained power in Sikkim with a decisive victory in the state assembly elections, winning 31 of the 32 seats and relegating the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) to just one seat. This result marks a significant shift in the state’s politics, further diminishing the influence of the SDF, which had been a dominant force since 1984 but first faced defeat in 2019.

Incumbent Chief Minister and SKM leader Prem Singh Tamang secured wins in both Soreng-Chakung and Rhenchok constituencies. Tamang attributed the victory to the hard work of party cadres and the SKM’s developmental achievements over the past five years. He said that the SKM accomplished in five years what the SDF could not achieve in 25 years.

The SKM contested the April 19 elections alone, having previously allied with the BJP in 2019. The Congress, BJP, and Citizen Action Party-Sikkim (CAP-S) failed to win any seats.
