Snowy days ahead: Gulmarg beckons skiers this Christmas and New Year

As Kashmir braces for snowy days, the valley is experiencing a dry, cold spell with temperatures dipping to as low as minus 9°C in Gulmarg. This famous skiing destination, which turns into a winter wonderland once snow hits, is poised for a peak season ahead. Visitors are eagerly awaiting the thick blankets of snow that make the slopes ideal for skiing, particularly during Christmas and New Year.

Cold Temperatures Across Kashmir
While Gulmarg is at the heart of the winter tourism buzz, other areas of Kashmir are also enduring sub-zero temperatures. Locations like Padder in Kishtwar (-7.5°C), Sonamarg (-7°C), and the Zojila Pass (-20°C) are feeling the chill, with Zojila’s extreme cold posing a risk of frostbite in less than 30 minutes.

Gulmarg: The Skiers’ Paradise
Known for its stunning snow-covered landscapes and abundant skiing opportunities, Gulmarg is a must-visit for adventure enthusiasts. The ski slopes here cater to all skill levels, with the bowl area ideal for beginners and Apharwat Peak offering challenges for experts. The Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world’s highest ski lifts, is a highlight that takes visitors up to Apharwat Peak.

How to Reach Gulmarg
Travelers can fly to Srinagar, which is well connected with major airports in India. From Srinagar, a 51-kilometer drive (the last 13 kilometers uphill) will take you to Gulmarg. If snow has already started falling, make sure your vehicle’s tires are chained at Tangmarg to prevent slipping.

Accommodation and Ski Gear
Gulmarg offers a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets, but it is recommended to book in advance due to the high demand during the year-end holidays. As for skiing gear, visitors can easily rent equipment from local shops at affordable rates. Full ski kits (skis, poles, boots, helmets, jackets, etc.) are available at the Gulmarg Ski Shop, starting at Rs 1,500 per day.

Whether you’re new to skiing or an experienced skier looking for an adventure, Gulmarg promises an unforgettable winter experience with its stunning landscapes, challenging slopes, and vibrant atmosphere during the holiday season.
