New Delhi: Scorching heat in India’s capital is challenging a long-standing law requiring lawyers to wear heavy black robes and coats. At least three High Courts have allowed lawyers to ditch the robes for the summer, with calls for a nationwide relaxation of the dress code, repoted Deccan Herald.

The extreme temperatures, reaching 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) this week, have also impacted court proceedings. Judges in one New Delhi court postponed a case due to a lack of air conditioning and water.

While higher courts have AC, many lower courts lack proper ventilation and rely on fans.

The national capital and other parts of north India and western India are witnessing severe heat waves from last one week. Paramedics have been deployed at all the polling booths where the last phase of voting for the general election will be conducted on June 1. The paramedics would treat immediately, if anyone falls while waiting for the turn to cast the vote.
