Gurugram: Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi underwent a routine medical check-up at a private hospital in Gurugram on Wednesday and has since returned home, the Indian National Congress clarified.
The clarification came after reports earlier in the day suggested that the veteran leader had been admitted for a minor surgical procedure.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh issued a brief statement confirming that Sonia Gandhi had only undergone a routine examination.
“Smt Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the CPP, had a routine medical check-up and is now back home,” Ramesh said.
Congress veteran has faced recurring health issues
The 79-year-old Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan has experienced several health-related issues in recent years and has undergone treatment at hospitals in Delhi and other locations on multiple occasions.
In March this year, Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital after reportedly complaining of uneasiness.
During that hospital stay, her children — Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra — were also present at the hospital.
Earlier in January, Sonia Gandhi had been hospitalised due to respiratory discomfort.
Doctors had then attributed her condition to a mild aggravation of bronchial asthma caused by Delhi’s winter conditions and increasing pollution levels.
Multiple hospital visits in recent years
Throughout 2025, Sonia Gandhi reportedly underwent treatment or medical observation on several occasions.
These included hospital visits related to stomach ailments, respiratory concerns, and routine medical examinations conducted in Delhi and Shimla.
Despite recurring health issues, Sonia Gandhi has continued to remain politically active and influential within the Congress party.
A five-time Lok Sabha MP before moving to the Rajya Sabha, she has been among the most prominent leaders of the Congress for over two decades.
She has also served two terms as president of the Congress party and continues to play a significant role in organisational and political decision-making.
Senior Congress leadership remains active
Sonia Gandhi currently serves as chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party and remains one of the party’s most senior leaders.
Even after stepping away from day-to-day organisational leadership, she continues to hold considerable influence over major political and strategic decisions within the party.
The Congress clarification regarding her medical visit aimed to dispel speculation surrounding her health after reports of hospitalisation surfaced earlier in the day.
Party leaders indicated that the visit was precautionary and routine in nature and that there was no cause for concern.
