At least four college students were killed and one was seriously injured in a high-speed car accident in Telangana’s Rangareddy district near Hyderabad in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
The accident occurred near Mirzaguda Gate in the Chevella area, under the jurisdiction of the Mokila police station, when a sports car allegedly travelling at very high speed went out of control and crashed.
Car hits divider, crashes into tree
According to police, the speeding vehicle first rammed into a road divider before crashing into a tree with immense force. The impact was so severe that four students died on the spot.
The deceased have been identified as Surya Teja, a second-year BBA student; Sumith and Sri Nikhil, both third-year BBA students; and Rohith, a student of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology.
The injured student, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was rushed to a private hospital in Hyderabad, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Bodies shifted for post-mortem
Police said the bodies of the deceased were shifted to the Chevella Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. Family members of the victims have been informed, and further procedures are underway.
Preliminary investigation suggests overspeeding as the main cause of the accident. “The car was travelling at a very high speed and the driver appears to have lost control,” a police official said.
Investigation underway
A case has been registered, and police are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to determine the exact sequence of events. Officials are also trying to ascertain who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash and whether alcohol or other factors were involved.
The accident has once again highlighted concerns over reckless driving and overspeeding, particularly among young motorists on city outskirts and highway stretches.
Residents in the Chevella area said accidents have become frequent on the road due to speeding vehicles, especially during late-night and early-morning hours.
Police have appealed to motorists to follow traffic rules strictly and avoid overspeeding, warning that reckless driving can have fatal consequences not only for drivers but also for passengers and other road users.
