On Sunday, a statue commemorating the victim of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case was found shattered in Kolkata’s “Droho Gallery,” a symbolic protest space set up by junior doctors demanding justice. The broken statue, depicting the victim in a saree, was discovered by junior doctors who were uncertain whether it was a case of vandalism or accidental damage. Another statue in a doctor’s uniform, also placed in the gallery, has since been removed.
This incident has heightened ongoing protests by junior doctors, who have been demanding justice and improved security since the tragic incident on August 9. The trial of the main accused, Sanjay Roy, began on November 11, with charges under serious sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
The protests have led to political tensions, with the ruling TMC criticizing the doctors, alleging external political influence and urging them to prioritize their duties over protests.
