KANNUR: A stray dog unleashed terror in Kannur city on Tuesday, attacking and injuring 56 people across multiple locations before it was eventually found dead.
The alarming incident began around 11 AM and lasted until after 1 PM, with the dog roaming through key city areas such as the new bus stand, SBI premises, and Prabhat Junction. Victims, including children and the elderly, were bitten mostly on their legs. Many were chased down by the dog, unable to fend it off despite using umbrellas and other objects in self-defense.
Saju, a native of Kottiyoor, was attacked soon after disembarking from a bus and heading toward a bank. Others suffered injuries while exiting financial institutions or simply walking through the city.
All 56 injured were rushed to the Kannur District Hospital where they received anti-rabies vaccines. However, two individuals who developed allergic reactions to the vaccine were shifted to the Government Medical College for further care.
Authorities have not confirmed what led to the dog’s erratic behavior, but the city remains on high alert. Animal welfare and health officials are expected to conduct an investigation.
