At Meenkunnu beach in Azhikode, two young men went missing after being carried off by powerful waves on Monday afternoon. The individuals have been identified as Prineesh, aged 27, from Veliyannoor, and Ganesh, aged 28, from Kodolipram in Pattanur.
The incident happened near 4 pm when the pair were swimming in the ocean following a photo session on a rocky outcrop. Observers from the shoreline and nearby locals noticed the youths being pulled by the strong currents and quickly alerted emergency responders.
The Azhikal Coastal Police promptly launched a search and rescue operation. However, despite their immediate response, the missing men have yet to be found. The rough sea conditions have significantly impeded rescue efforts, making it difficult for search teams to operate effectively.
Azhikode panchayat president Ajeesh K confirmed that the search is ongoing but remains challenging due to the turbulent waters. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, hoping for a breakthrough in locating the missing youths.
Locals and officials alike remain anxious as the rescue operation persists into the evening, with hopes high for a safe recovery. The sea’s unpredictable nature continues to pose serious risks to swimmers and beachgoers in the area.
This incident serves as a harsh reminder to exercise caution while engaging in water activities, especially during adverse weather and sea conditions.
