A heartbreaking incident unfolded at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Warangal, where a second-year engineering student, 22-year-old Hritik Sai, ended his life after reportedly struggling with poor academic performance. Hritik, who hailed from Hyderabad, had been staying in a campus hostel and was said to be visibly withdrawn in recent weeks.
His friends last saw him on Wednesday, after which he disappeared without notice. Concerned by his sudden absence, hostel staff and fellow students contacted his family. The next day, on April 10, residents near Vaddepalli lake—on the outskirts of Kazipet—spotted a body floating in the water and alerted the authorities.
Warangal police retrieved the body and transported it to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital for post-mortem procedures. In a bid to identify the deceased, the police shared his photos and details on social media. Hritik’s friends later confirmed his identity and also disclosed that he had been battling emotional distress over his academic results.
Investigators have opened a case and are probing the matter further. This tragic loss has once again highlighted the mental health challenges students face in high-pressure academic environments.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the campus, sparking conversations around the need for timely counselling and better emotional support systems for students under stress.
