Sendhwa: An 18-year-old college student was injured after she was allegedly attacked by a fellow student at a government college in Sendhwa, Madhya Pradesh, after rejecting his marriage proposal, police said.
The incident took place on Tuesday at Veer Balidani Khajya Nayak Government Postgraduate College. Police identified the accused as 18-year-old Ganesh Thakur, who was subsequently arrested.
Attack followed rejected proposal
According to police, the student was leaving the college after completing her examination when Thakur approached her and expressed his desire to marry her. She rejected the proposal, following which he allegedly pointed a country-made pistol at her and attempted to fire.
The weapon reportedly failed to discharge. Thakur then allegedly took out a knife and attacked the student. She sustained an injury to her neck and was taken to Sendhwa Civil Hospital for treatment.
Students caught accused
The attack caused panic on the college premises. Students and college staff intervened, apprehended the accused and handed him over to the police.
Police said a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation is under way. Another report said the police seized the country-made pistol and knife following the incident.
The incident has once again brought attention to the need for safe educational environments where students can pursue their studies without fear or intimidation.
