A schoolboy in Madurai had a close brush with death while hanging onto the footboard of a jam-packed government bus near Theppakullam earlier this week. The chilling scene, captured on video and now widely shared online, shows several uniformed students dangerously leaning out of the overcrowded bus. As the vehicle made a turn, their feet scraped the ground.

In a heart-stopping moment, one student lost control after grazing a passing auto-rickshaw. Though he stumbled, he miraculously managed to regain balance, narrowly avoiding a disastrous fall. The footage has intensified concerns about student safety on public transport.

Residents are divided in opinion. While some blame students for reckless behaviour, others argue that the root issue lies in the shortage of government buses during peak school hours. They stress that in areas with dense student populations, better transport planning is crucial.

The incident also recalls a similar mishap from Namakkal last July, when a woman named Saradha was thrown off a turning bus. She was flung nearly 20 feet and suffered major injuries, prompting alarm about passenger safety on moving vehicles.

As these accidents grow more frequent, citizens are urging the transport department to act. Suggestions include increasing bus frequency, adding school-special services, enforcing anti-footboard travel rules, and installing secure door systems.

Without proactive solutions, such “near misses” may soon turn tragic. The time for reactive measures is over—student lives are at stake.
