New Delhi: As Akshay Kumar’s ‘Airlift’, rises above people’s expectations and continues to touch the hearts of viewers with the apt portrayal of the plight of Indians stuck in war torn Kuwait at the height of the Gulf war, a facebook post reveals information about Sunny Matthews, the real hero behind this true story.

Directed by Raja Menon, the plot of the film revolves around the story of the biggest civil evacuation initiated by any country. The Indian government, in collaboration with Air India, had evacuated 1,70,000 people using 488 flights in 59 days.

As soon the movie hit the theatres, the character of Ranjit Katyal played by Akshay Kumar caught the attention of everyone. People were curious to know about the brave man who carried out an operation as big and dangerous as this and brought his fellow Indians back home.

While Kumar revealed that there was a team or two or three people involved in the operation and that they changed the name of the main person involved for security reasons, research by Menon said that two men – Sunny Mathews and Vedi – had formed an unofficial committee at that time, and carried out the rescue work

However, while not much is known about Vedi, a Facebook post shed light on the role played by Sunny Matthews.

Sunny Mathews’ granddaughter Rhea Mathews recently shared the post on Facebook where she wrote a heartfelt tribute to the real hero.

In her post, she says, “Today ‘Airlift’ releases, a movie based on the largest civil evacuation (Indians based in Kuwait) during the Iraqi invasion in 1990. Akshay Kumar’s leading role is based on a few people such as my grandfather, who facilitated the evacuation of nearly 170,000 Indians and brought them safely home”
“My grandfather stayed through the turmoil of it all and put his life at risk to secure safety for all those he could help. He is a great man and through all his success has always stressed on the importance of humility, gratitude and love, especially to those not so fortunate. An inspirational icon who has touched the hearts of many and lived a life of service. I wish I could even be half the man he is. He may not have many years left but through this movie, his legacy will live on and for that I will be forever proud”

Rhea has also shared newspaper clippings to add substance to her story.
