Tamil Nadu Hooch Tragedy Death Count Rises To 65

The death toll from the hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district has risen to 65, according to the district collectorate. As of 4 pm on Sunday, 148 people have been discharged from hospitals across the state. Currently, two individuals are receiving treatment at the Kallakurichi Government Medical Hospital, six in Puducherry, and eight in Salem government hospitals, bringing the total number of people undergoing treatment to 16.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) previously took suo moto cognizance of a media report on the deaths and formed a three-member inquiry committee, led by NCW Member Khushbu Sundar, to investigate the incident. A delegation from the NCW, led by Sundar, visited the families of the victims who died from consuming spurious liquor in Kallakurichi district.

On June 28, an NDA delegation, including BJP leaders Anil Antony, Arvind Menon, and MP GK Vasan, met with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes Chairman, Kishore Makwana, to submit a memorandum regarding the Kallakurichi illicit liquor tragedy. They urged the Chairman to ensure that the families of the victims receive adequate compensation and justice. The memorandum called for urgent intervention to secure justice for the scheduled caste victims of the tragedy.

ADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, along with party workers, held a hunger strike demanding a CBI inquiry into the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy and the resignation of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, citing the “inefficiency of the DMK government.”
