Theni: Tamil Nadu Police have arrested 13 of the 17 undertrial prisoners who escaped from Thekkampatti Sub-Jail in Theni district, following an intensive search operation involving drone surveillance and ground teams. Eight more prisoners were apprehended after drones helped police identify their hiding places in forested areas, while a manhunt continues for the remaining four.

The arrests mark a significant development in the search operation launched after the prisoners escaped from the sub-jail on the night of October 26. Police teams have been searching nearby forests, roads and other possible escape routes to prevent the fugitives from leaving the area.

Drones help locate prisoners in forest areas

Police deployed drones to scan forested and difficult-to-access terrain near Theni after receiving information that some of the escaped prisoners could be hiding there. The aerial surveillance helped narrow down the search area, allowing ground personnel to move in and apprehend eight more prisoners.

The operation involved a substantial deployment of police personnel, with reports indicating that more than 300 personnel took part in the search. Special teams were formed to cover different locations, while checkposts and vehicle checks were used to restrict the movement of the escapees.

The use of drones provided an additional means of monitoring dense vegetation and terrain that can be challenging to search entirely on foot. Police have continued combining aerial surveillance with ground-level combing operations as they work to locate the four prisoners who remain at large.

How the escape reportedly took place

According to preliminary reports, the escape occurred at around 10.30 pm on October 26. Investigators suspect that one of the prisoners pretended to suffer an epileptic seizure, prompting prison personnel to approach and open the cell.

The prisoners allegedly overpowered the staff members, took the keys and fled the premises. A police or prison personnel member sustained injuries during the incident, according to media reports.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the escape, including the alleged assault on prison staff and possible lapses in security and supervision. The sequence of events remains subject to the investigation.

Nine prison staff members suspended

The escape has also prompted disciplinary action within the Tamil Nadu Prisons Department. Nine prison staff members have reportedly been suspended over alleged negligence in connection with the incident.

Senior prison and police officials have reviewed the situation as the search operation continues. Investigators are examining how the prisoners managed to escape and whether established security procedures were followed.

The incident has drawn attention to prison security arrangements and the need for effective supervision, functioning security systems and rapid coordination among personnel during emergencies.

Search continues for four escapees

With 13 prisoners back in custody, police are concentrating their efforts on locating the remaining four. Search teams are continuing to examine forested areas and possible routes out of the district, while surveillance and checks are being maintained to prevent the fugitives from evading capture.

Authorities are also coordinating efforts to monitor movement towards neighbouring districts and border areas. The operation will continue until the remaining escapees are traced and brought back into custody.

The case has highlighted the role of technology in supporting large-scale police searches. However, officials still depend on ground teams, local information and coordinated checks to complete the operation.

Police are continuing their investigation into both the escape and the circumstances that allowed it to occur. Further details about accountability and any additional security measures are expected as the inquiry progresses.
