Chennai: Tamil Nadu is set to roll out the second phase of its flagship women’s welfare scheme, the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam, on Friday, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin scheduled to formally inaugurate the expanded programme at a grand event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. The launch marks another milestone in the State’s efforts to strengthen women’s economic security and widen the coverage of its direct benefit initiative.
Govt to expand monthly assistance scheme
The second phase follows the recent announcement by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who confirmed that the popular cash assistance programme for women heads of families would be scaled up to include additional beneficiaries. The scheme, introduced in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on March 27, 2023, provides ₹1,000 monthly financial support to eligible women to ensure basic income stability and enhance household welfare.
During the first phase, 1,13,75,492 women were enrolled across Tamil Nadu, making it one of the largest income-support programmes for women in India. Officials noted that the upcoming phase will expand coverage further, bringing more eligible families under the safety net and reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s social welfare commitment.
Celebrating Tamil women’s empowerment
To commemorate the expansion, the State government is organising a special programme titled ‘Vellum Thamizh Pengal’ (Victorious Tamil Women). The event is designed to highlight Tamil Nadu’s progress in championing women’s empowerment through a range of welfare schemes and social-support mechanisms.
The event will witness participation from distinguished personalities, including noted Gandhian and social activist Krishnammal Jagannathan and Paralympics medal-winner Thulasimathi Murugesan. Women beneficiaries from various districts will also share their impactful stories, demonstrating how initiatives such as the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam have altered their lives by providing dignity, stability, and economic independence.
Showcasing wider welfare initiatives
The December 12 event will also shine a spotlight on several other landmark schemes implemented by the Tamil Nadu government to support women and vulnerable groups. These include:
- Vidiyal Payanam – free bus travel for women
- Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam – home-based healthcare delivery
- Nalam Kakkum Stalin – health and wellness initiative
- Thozhi Viduthigal – working women hostels
- Nannilam Magalir Nilavudamai Thittam – women land rights scheme
Officials stated that the expansion of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam is aligned with the government’s broader mission of ensuring social justice, promoting women’s autonomy, and enhancing inclusive growth across the State.
