Chennai: A cattle owner in Tamil Nadu has been arrested following an incident where his cow attacked a nine-year-old girl. The distressing video of the incident, which took place in Chennai’s MMDA Colony, went viral. In the video, the girl, dressed in school attire, was attacked by a cow with its calf. The cow repeatedly charged at the girl, despite attempts by men to scare it away by throwing stones. The girl was left in a critical condition.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) imposed a fine of ₹25,000 on the cattle owner. Both the cow and its calf were placed under observation in a cattle shed in Chennai’s Perambur area to determine if the attack was due to illness or other reasons, according to news agency PTI.

The incident occurred as the girl was returning home from school with her mother and younger brother. After receiving medical treatment, the girl’s mother filed a complaint, leading to the arrest of the 26-year-old cow owner.

The police have charged him for not adequately maintaining the cattle and allowing them to roam freely.

GCC Commissioner J Radhakrishnan visited the girl in the hospital and expressed his concern, considering the incident “very unfortunate.” He revealed that a fine of ₹25,000 had been imposed on the cattle owner, stressing that cattle must not be allowed to wander onto roads. He mentioned that in 2023, several cattle owners have collectively been fined ₹51 lakh for permitting their cattle to roam on the streets.
