A teacher at a government-run primary school in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district has been booked after a Class 5 student reportedly suffered injuries following a punishment related to a mathematics problem.

The incident occurred on March 10 at the Zilla Parishad Primary School in Deoli Kalan.

Student returned home with injuries

According to reports, the 10-year-old girl returned home from school with visible injuries to her hand. When her parents asked about the bruises, she reportedly told them that she had been punished after giving an incorrect answer to a mathematics problem.

Concerned about her condition, the parents sought further clarification about what had happened at the school.

Child Helpline intervenes

Following the incident, members of the Child Helpline team visited the student’s residence and conducted an inquiry into the matter.

Authorities said that the girl had sustained injuries to her left hand during the incident.

Based on the findings of the inquiry, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the teacher.

Investigation underway

Officials stated that the case was registered after intervention by the Child Helpline team, and further investigation is currently underway.

The incident has raised concerns about student safety and the importance of ensuring that disciplinary practices in schools follow child protection guidelines.

Authorities have emphasised the need for schools to maintain safe and supportive learning environments for students.
