Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s former teacher HC Patel has recalled several memories from his school days, describing him as a sharp student who actively participated in academic, cultural and other activities.
Patel taught Modi Mathematics and Science at a school in Vadnagar between June 1965 and May 1967. Speaking to the media around Modi’s 76th birthday, he remembered his former student’s strong memory, interest in public speaking and adventurous nature.
From school stage to a memorable childhood adventure
Patel recalled that Modi once played the role of folk hero Jogidas Khuman in a school play organised to raise funds for a compound wall. His performance reportedly received around 10 minutes of applause from the audience.
Another story that stayed with Patel involved Vadnagar’s Sharmishtha lake. According to the teacher, Modi once brought a baby crocodile home after finding it at the lake. His mother, Heeraben, questioned what would happen to the crocodile’s mother and asked him to return it. Modi subsequently released the animal back into the lake.
Teacher remembers former student’s journey
Patel also recalled Modi’s interest in swimming and his participation in school activities. He said Modi had a sharp memory and that his qualities were noticeable even during his school years.
The teacher further remembered meeting Modi after he became Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001. According to Patel, Modi recognised him amid a crowd, met him and touched his feet.
Patel also recalled that Modi later honoured several of his former teachers during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister.
The memories offer a glimpse into the childhood and school years of the Prime Minister through the recollections of a teacher who taught him more than five decades ago.
